Chapter 9

Seas the day

I’m tempted to call out sick from work after my chat with Hoyt. It would be a crappy move to leave everyone scrambling for a replacement at the last minute. You can’t just close the hospital pharmacy. I mean, with the machines nicely stocked, even in the ER, and the on-call service for emergency coverage, you can. But not over relationship drama that I can’t explain to anyone at work.

I need to actually have a conversation with Kirby instead of the way I left things with him, but that can wait until after my shift. I was scared of what it might mean to really give this mating thing a chance, but what if it really can work out for us? It’s just as well I have a shift. I need time to wrap my head around what that might look like before we talk.

Over the years, I’ve had to learn to block out my personal life while I’m at work. I push Kirby and the way I left things to the back of my mind to percolate and hunker down in the pharmacy. The animal attack victim we admitted last night still needs IV antibiotics, just to be on the safe side.

“Hey, Doc. Did you see Mr. Allen has already improved enough to be out of the ICU?” Brad asks as he grabs the IV bag to deliver. I verify the vancomycin dosing based on Mr. Allen’s evening labs.

“How many times have I told you that you can just call me Tris, Brad?” I roll my eyes at Brad. None of the pharmacists I work with actually use the doctor title our degrees technically entitle us to. This shouldn’t be a surprise to him.

“A couple.” Brad shrugs. He waggles his eyebrows at me. “Did you see how fast he’s improving? Super wolf healing, right? If you know, you know.”

“Our patient is not a wolf, Bradley.” I resist the urge to rub my temples. Hoyt might be right that I’d complain about any co-worker with the audacity to interrupt my concentration, but Brad pushes my buttons without trying. This college boy is so damn talkative he could chat a rock’s ears off.

“Sure, Tris. Whatever you say.” Brad winks at me, a suggestive twinkle in his eyes.

Brad’s jokes about werewolf bites hit differently now that I’ve had to accept they’re a real possibility. I have to wonder if he actually knows what he’s talking about. Does the knowing way his eyes drag over the line of hickies Kirby’s tentacle suckers left on my neck, barely peeking above the lapels of my white lab coat just mean he knows I got laid? Or is there a deeper understanding of how they ended up so perfectly symmetrical?

Ugh, I am overthinking this. Brad scoops up a few more pre-packaged dose packs to refill the automated dispensing machine for the second floor med room. Then he leaves the pharmacy, whistling as he makes his deliveries. I press my fingers to the tender red mark on my neck.
